How Computers Work Overview

End-to-end view from transistors to applications.

How it works

A computer is built in layers, each hiding the details of the one below. Transistors form logic gates, gates form circuits such as adders and memory cells, and circuits make up a processor that repeatedly fetches an instruction from memory, decodes it and executes it. Caches, main memory and storage form a hierarchy trading speed for size. The operating system manages processes, memory, files and devices and offers system calls, and languages and compilers translate human-written programs into machine instructions. Networks connect machines using protocols such as TCP/IP, and applications sit on top.

Where it is used

This overview helps connect every other area of the course, from why a loop is fast to how a web page reaches your screen.

Common pitfall

Abstractions leak: performance, security and bugs often depend on lower layers, such as cache behavior or integer overflow. Learn at least one layer below the one you work in.
