Beginner Topic 2 of 51 AI & Machine Learning
Machine Learning Overview
Algorithms that improve from data instead of explicit rules.
How it works
Machine learning is the subfield of AI in which algorithms learn patterns from data instead of being explicitly programmed with rules. A model has parameters that are adjusted during training to minimize an error measure on examples, and is then evaluated on unseen data to estimate how well it generalizes. Main settings are supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised and reinforcement learning. A typical workflow covers data collection, cleaning, feature design, model selection, training, evaluation, deployment and monitoring.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Instead of writing rules, you give the algorithm examples.
- It finds patterns and produces a model.
- The model makes predictions on new data.
- Better data or more examples improve it.
- Types: supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement.
Where it is used
Prediction of prices and demand, classification of images and text, anomaly detection, personalization and forecasting use machine learning in industry and science.
Common pitfall
Poor data quality, leakage of test information into training, unrepresentative samples and optimizing the wrong metric are the top causes of failure. Complex models are not always better than simple baselines. Always start with a simple baseline, split data properly and monitor models after deployment because data drifts.
