Advanced Topic 44 of 51 AI & Machine Learning

Natural Language Processing

Computational handling of human language.

How it works

Natural language processing enables computers to understand and generate human language. Tasks include tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, parsing, named-entity recognition, sentiment analysis, text classification, question answering, summarization, translation and dialogue. The field moved from rules and statistical models such as n-grams and hidden Markov models to word embeddings, recurrent networks and now transformer-based pretrained language models fine-tuned or prompted for tasks.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Text is cleaned and tokenized.
  2. A model converts tokens to vectors and processes them.
  3. Tasks: translation, sentiment, question answering and summarization.
  4. Ambiguity and context make language hard.
  5. Pretrained models dominate today.

Where it is used

Search engines, chatbots, translation services, email filtering, voice assistants, document analysis, content moderation and analytics on customer feedback use NLP.

Common pitfall

Language is ambiguous, context-dependent, full of idioms and varies across dialects and languages, so models trained on mostly English data underperform elsewhere. Systems may reflect biases or produce fluent but wrong text. Preprocessing choices affect results. Evaluate on realistic data with human review, handle multilingual text and Unicode carefully and monitor performance over time.

Where it fits in the course
