Tokenization

Splitting text into units for models.

How it works

Tokenization splits text into units, tokens, that a model processes. Simple tokenizers split on whitespace and punctuation into words, but modern language models use subword methods such as byte-pair encoding, WordPiece and SentencePiece that break rare words into smaller pieces from a learned vocabulary, balancing vocabulary size and coverage with no unknown words. Each token maps to an integer ID and then to an embedding. Special tokens mark beginnings, separators and padding.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Models cannot read raw characters, so text is split into tokens.
  2. Word pieces such as un, break and able handle rare words.
  3. Punctuation becomes its own token.
  4. Each token maps to an integer id.
  5. Vocabulary choice affects cost and quality.

Where it is used

Every NLP system and large language model tokenizes input, and token counts determine context length limits and API costs.

Common pitfall

Tokenizers are model-specific: using the wrong one gives garbage. Words in languages with little training data split into many tokens, which makes them more expensive and often less accurately modeled. Numbers, code and whitespace can tokenize in surprising ways, affecting arithmetic and formatting. Unicode normalization matters. Always use the tokenizer that matches the model and inspect token boundaries when debugging.
