Search Algorithms in AI

Exploring state spaces for goal states.

How it works

Search algorithms explore a space of states to find a path from an initial state to a goal. Uninformed methods include breadth-first search, depth-first search, iterative deepening and uniform-cost search; informed methods use heuristics, such as greedy best-first search and A*, which combines path cost with an admissible estimate to guarantee optimal solutions. Local search methods such as hill climbing, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms improve a single candidate, and adversarial search handles games.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Treat the problem as states connected by actions.
  2. Keep a frontier of states to explore.
  3. Expand one and add its neighbors.
  4. Repeat until the goal is found.
  5. BFS, DFS, uniform cost and A* differ in which node they pick next.

Where it is used

Route planning, puzzle solving, robot motion planning, scheduling, theorem proving and game AI use search.

Common pitfall

Exhaustive search suffers combinatorial explosion in large spaces, so quality heuristics and pruning are crucial. Inadmissible heuristics can return suboptimal paths, and memory can run out with breadth-first and A*. Local search can get stuck in local optima. Choose the algorithm by whether optimality, completeness, memory or speed matters most, and check for repeated states.
