Network Programming with Sockets

Writing programs that communicate via the socket API.

How it works

The sockets API lets programs communicate over networks. A TCP server calls socket, bind, listen and accept, and a client calls socket and connect; both then use send and recv or read and write. UDP uses sendto and recvfrom without a connection. Servers handle many clients using threads, processes or event-driven I/O with select, poll, epoll or asynchronous frameworks, and sockets can be blocking or non-blocking.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. The server calls socket, bind, listen and accept.
  2. The client calls socket and connect.
  3. The server accept returns a new socket for this client.
  4. Both sides use send and recv on the socket.
  5. Either side calls close when finished.

Where it is used

Web servers, chat applications, game servers, database clients, custom protocols and IoT gateways are all built with sockets, often via higher-level libraries.

Common pitfall

TCP is a stream, so one send may arrive as several reads or two sends merge into one; you must frame messages with lengths or delimiters. Ignoring partial writes, errors and timeouts causes hangs. Forgetting byte-order conversion corrupts numbers. Always close sockets, set timeouts, validate input from the network and handle SIGPIPE and connection resets.

Where it fits in the course
