Neural Networks

Layered networks of weighted units learning representations.

How it works

A neural network is a model made of layers of simple units, neurons, each computing a weighted sum of its inputs plus a bias and passing it through a nonlinear activation. Stacking layers lets the network learn hierarchical representations, and with enough units it can approximate any continuous function. Parameters are trained with gradient descent using backpropagation on a loss function. Architectures include feedforward networks, convolutional networks, recurrent networks and transformers.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Inputs enter the first layer.
  2. Each unit takes a weighted sum and applies a nonlinearity.
  3. Later layers build more abstract features.
  4. The output layer gives the prediction.
  5. Training adjusts the weights by backpropagation.

Where it is used

Image and speech recognition, language models, recommendation, translation, game playing and scientific modeling use deep neural networks, powered by GPUs and large datasets.

Common pitfall

They need lots of data and compute, can overfit and are often hard to interpret. Training is sensitive to initialization, learning rate and architecture. Vanishing gradients and bad data cause failures. Start with small architectures, normalize inputs, use regularization such as dropout and batch normalization and monitor training and validation curves.
