Intermediate Topic 30 of 51 AI & Machine Learning
Perceptron
Simplest single-unit linear classifier.
How it works
The perceptron, introduced by Frank Rosenblatt, is the simplest neural unit: it computes a weighted sum of inputs plus a bias and outputs 1 if the sum is positive, otherwise 0, forming a linear classifier. The perceptron learning rule updates weights by adding the input scaled by the error when it misclassifies an example, and it converges in finite steps if the data is linearly separable. Minsky and Papert showed that a single perceptron cannot represent XOR.
Step-by-step walkthrough
- Each input is multiplied by its weight.
- The products are summed with a bias.
- If the sum is above zero the output is 1, otherwise 0.
- Wrong answers adjust the weights.
- It learns only linearly separable problems, like AND but not XOR.
Where it is used
It is the historical building block of neural networks, and multilayer perceptrons stack such units with smooth activations to solve nonlinear problems. It is a basic teaching model for linear classification.
Common pitfall
On non-separable data, the algorithm never converges and keeps oscillating. The hard threshold is not differentiable, so gradient-based training needs smooth activations. Inputs should be scaled. A single layer cannot learn nonlinear boundaries. Move to multilayer networks with backpropagation for real problems.
