Beginner Topic 13 of 51 Distributed Systems & Cloud

Object Storage

Flat storage of blobs addressed by keys.

How it works

Object storage manages data as objects, each with the data, metadata and a unique key, in a flat namespace of buckets rather than a hierarchy of files or blocks. It is accessed through HTTP APIs such as S3, scales to exabytes, replicates data across devices and zones for very high durability, often eleven nines, and charges by storage and requests. Features include versioning, lifecycle policies, storage classes for hot and cold data, presigned URLs and event notifications.

Where it is used

Backups, media assets, static website hosting, data lakes, logs, machine-learning datasets and software distribution use object stores such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage and Azure Blob Storage.

Common pitfall

Objects are immutable, replaced as a whole, with no in-place edits or true directories, and latency is higher than block storage. Misconfigured public buckets are a leading data-leak cause. Listing and request costs add up with many small objects. Plan key naming, encryption, access policies, lifecycle rules and consistency semantics.
