Beginner Topic 11 of 51 Emerging & Frontier Topics

Search Engines

Systems crawling, indexing and ranking pages.

How it works

A web search engine works in three stages. Crawlers follow links to discover and fetch pages while respecting robots.txt, an indexer parses content, extracts text and links and builds an inverted index across many servers, and a ranker answers a query by retrieving candidate pages and ordering them using hundreds of signals such as text relevance, link authority like PageRank, freshness, location and quality. Query understanding corrects spelling and interprets intent, and results pages add snippets and special features. Sharding and caching deliver answers in milliseconds across billions of documents.

Where it is used

Search engines let people find information, and understanding them helps with site structure and search engine optimization.

Common pitfall

Duplicate content, blocked crawling and slow pages reduce visibility, and spam and manipulation force constant updates. Provide clear structure, good titles, fast loading and original content.
