Self-Driving Systems

Software perceiving and controlling vehicles.

How it works

A self-driving system perceives, plans and controls a vehicle. Perception fuses cameras, lidar, radar and ultrasonic sensors with neural networks to detect lanes, objects, signs and people, and to estimate where the car is using maps and GPS. Prediction forecasts how others will move, planning chooses a route, behavior and a smooth safe trajectory, and control turns it into steering, throttle and braking commands. SAE levels from 0 to 5 describe the degree of automation, and safety engineering uses redundancy, simulation, scenario testing and fallback behavior. Some designs are modular, others learn end to end.

Where it is used

Applications include driver assistance, robotaxis, trucking, delivery robots and warehouse vehicles.

Common pitfall

Rare edge cases such as unusual weather and unexpected behavior are hard to cover, sensors fail and over-trust by drivers is dangerous. Test with miles, simulation and closed tracks, and design clear handover rules.
