Advanced Topic 49 of 51 Emerging & Frontier Topics
Green Computing
Reducing the energy footprint of computation.
How it works
Green computing aims to reduce the energy use and environmental impact of hardware and software across its life. Measures include efficient chips and power management, virtualization and containers that raise utilization, data centers with good power usage effectiveness and renewable energy, scheduling work when and where the grid is cleaner, longer device lifetimes and recycling. Software choices matter too: efficient algorithms, less data transfer, caching, right-sized cloud resources and lighter machine learning models cut energy. Carbon accounting tools estimate emissions per task.
Where it is used
Cloud providers, companies and developers apply it to cut electricity bills and meet climate targets.
Common pitfall
Counting only operational energy ignores the large embodied emissions of manufacturing, and rebound effects can offset savings. Measure real usage, then optimize the biggest contributors first.
