Advanced Topic 45 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

Automotive Software

CAN bus and safety standards in vehicles.

How it works

Automotive software runs on dozens to over a hundred electronic control units in modern vehicles, controlling engines, brakes, airbags, infotainment, driver assistance and body electronics. It is developed under strict standards: AUTOSAR defines software architectures, ISO 26262 defines functional safety with ASIL levels, MISRA C governs coding and cybersecurity is regulated through ISO 21434. Networks such as CAN, LIN, FlexRay and automotive Ethernet connect ECUs, and over-the-air updates are increasingly common. Development uses model-based design, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing and rigorous verification.

Where it is used

Advanced driver-assistance systems, powertrain control, electric vehicle battery management and autonomous driving stacks are automotive software.

Common pitfall

Safety-critical failures can harm people, so requirements traceability, redundancy and fault handling are mandatory. Long vehicle lifetimes require years of updates and support. Complexity grows with features, and integration of many suppliers' components causes problems. Security of connected cars is a major concern. Follow standards, test extensively including fault injection and plan secure updates.

Where it fits in the course

Automotive Software is topic 45 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows Kalman Filter. The next topic is Smart Home Systems.
