Control Systems and PID

Feedback loops keeping outputs at targets.

How it works

A control system adjusts inputs to make a process follow a desired setpoint despite disturbances. In feedback control, a sensor measures the output, the error from the setpoint is computed and a controller produces the actuator command. A PID controller combines three terms: proportional, proportional to the current error, integral, which accumulates past error to eliminate steady-state offset, and derivative, which reacts to the rate of change to damp oscillations. Tuning uses methods such as Ziegler-Nichols or manual adjustment, and stability analysis uses transfer functions and poles.

Where it is used

Thermostats, cruise control, motor speed and position control, drones' attitude stabilization and industrial process control use PID loops.

Common pitfall

Poor tuning gives sluggish response, overshoot or oscillation. Integral windup, where the integrator grows during actuator saturation, needs anti-windup. Derivative amplifies noise, so filter it. Delays and nonlinearities limit performance. Sample at a consistent rate, clamp outputs, tune one term at a time and test across operating conditions.
