Kalman Filter

Estimating state from noisy measurements.

How it works

The Kalman filter is a recursive algorithm that estimates the state of a dynamic system from noisy measurements by combining a model-based prediction with new observations, weighting each by its uncertainty. It alternates a predict step, propagating the state and covariance with the system model, and an update step, computing the Kalman gain from the covariances, correcting the state toward the measurement and reducing uncertainty. For linear systems with Gaussian noise it is optimal; extended and unscented versions handle nonlinear systems.

Where it is used

GPS and inertial navigation fusion, tracking objects in radar and video, drones' attitude estimation, robotics localization, economic time-series and sensor smoothing use Kalman filters.

Common pitfall

Results depend on correct models and noise covariances, which are hard to tune; wrong values cause divergence or sluggishness. The extended filter linearization can fail for strongly nonlinear systems. Numerical issues require careful implementation, such as square-root forms. Outliers can mislead it, so use gating. Validate with simulations and examine innovation residuals.
