Advanced Topic 37 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

Embedded Linux

Linux customized for devices.

How it works

Embedded Linux uses the Linux kernel on embedded hardware, from routers and TVs to industrial controllers and cars, offering a rich ecosystem, networking, file systems, drivers and processes. A system includes a bootloader, kernel with a device tree describing hardware, a root file system with init and libraries and application software. Build systems such as Yocto and Buildroot create custom minimal images and cross-compile toolchains. Real-time behavior can be improved with the PREEMPT_RT patches.

Where it is used

Network equipment, smart displays, gateways, medical devices, automotive infotainment and single-board computers run embedded Linux.

Common pitfall

It needs more memory, storage and boot time than an RTOS and is not hard real-time by default. Customizing kernels and device trees takes expertise, and long product lifetimes require security patching and license compliance with GPL. Image bloat increases attack surface and size. Use read-only root file systems, minimal packages, secure boot and over-the-air update frameworks.

Where it fits in the course

Embedded Linux is topic 37 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows Edge AI and TinyML. The next topic is Device Drivers for Embedded.
