Advanced Topic 39 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

Hardware Debugging

JTAG, oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

How it works

Hardware debugging finds faults in electronics and firmware using instruments and interfaces. Tools include multimeters for voltage and continuity, oscilloscopes to view signals over time, logic analyzers to capture and decode digital buses such as I2C, SPI and UART, JTAG or SWD debug probes for breakpoints, single stepping and memory inspection on the chip, serial console logging, power analyzers and spectrum analyzers. Techniques include bisecting the problem, checking power rails and clocks first, comparing with known-good boards and using test points.

Where it is used

Bringing up new boards, diagnosing intermittent firmware failures, verifying timing, tracking down signal integrity issues and reverse engineering all use hardware debugging.

Common pitfall

Probing can disturb circuits, such as probe capacitance changing behavior, and short probes onto adjacent pins can damage components. Heisenbugs vanish when logging changes timing. Power problems, bad grounds and loose connections masquerade as software bugs. Start with power and clocks, document observations and change one thing at a time.

Where it fits in the course

Hardware Debugging is topic 39 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows Device Drivers for Embedded. The next topic is PCB Design Basics.
