Intermediate Topic 33 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Incident Response
Handling outages and learning from them.
How it works
Incident response is the organized handling of outages and security events. The usual flow is detect, triage, mitigate, resolve and review. An incident commander coordinates, others investigate and a communications lead updates stakeholders. Severity levels set urgency, a shared channel records actions, and runbooks give known fixes. The first goal is to restore service, for example by rolling back or failing over, not to find the root cause, which comes later. On-call rotations, paging tools and status pages support the process.
Where it is used
It limits user impact and downtime during outages, data breaches and failed deployments.
Common pitfall
Heroics by a single person, unclear roles and changing production without telling the team make things worse. Practice with game days, keep notes with timestamps and hand over clearly between shifts.
