Tracing with OpenTelemetry

Vendor-neutral instrumentation for traces.

How it works

Distributed tracing follows one request across many services. Each unit of work is a span with a start time, duration and attributes, and spans share a trace ID and link to their parents, forming a tree. OpenTelemetry is the vendor-neutral standard for generating this telemetry, with APIs and SDKs for many languages, automatic instrumentation for common libraries and a Collector that receives, processes and exports data to backends such as Jaeger, Tempo or commercial tools. Context propagation passes trace IDs through HTTP headers such as traceparent. The same project also covers metrics and logs.

Where it is used

Engineers use traces to find which service or database call makes a request slow and to understand dependencies in a microservice system.

Common pitfall

Missing propagation breaks traces into fragments, recording every request is costly and attributes can leak personal data. Use sampling, propagate context through queues and clients and keep attribute names consistent.

Where it fits in the course

Tracing with OpenTelemetry is topic 32 of 50 in DevOps & Tooling, rated Intermediate. It follows Prometheus and Grafana. The next topic is Incident Response.
