Prometheus and Grafana

Metrics collection and dashboards.

How it works

Prometheus is a metrics system that scrapes HTTP endpoints, usually /metrics, at regular intervals and stores the samples in a time-series database. Metrics have a name and labels, and types include counters, gauges and histograms. PromQL queries compute rates, percentiles and aggregations, for example rate(http_requests_total[5m]). Alerting rules feed Alertmanager, which groups, silences and routes notifications. Grafana connects to Prometheus and other data sources to draw dashboards of panels, variables and annotations. Service discovery finds targets automatically in Kubernetes and cloud environments.

Where it is used

Teams use them to track service health, build SLO dashboards, watch capacity and spot regressions after deployments.

Common pitfall

High-cardinality labels such as user IDs explode memory and storage, rate() applied to a gauge gives nonsense and cluttered dashboards hide the signal. Keep label values bounded, show a few meaningful panels and use remote storage for long retention.

Where it fits in the course

Prometheus and Grafana is topic 31 of 50 in DevOps & Tooling, rated Intermediate. It follows Logging Pipelines. The next topic is Tracing with OpenTelemetry.
