Bluetooth Low Energy
Short-range low-power wireless protocol.
How it works
Bluetooth Low Energy is a short-range wireless standard designed for very low power consumption, operating in the 2.4 GHz band. Devices advertise their presence, and a central connects to a peripheral. Data is organized by the Generic Attribute Profile into services containing characteristics, which can be read, written or subscribed to for notifications. Connection intervals and sleep between events make coin-cell operation possible for months or years. Features include pairing and encryption, beacons, mesh networking and, in newer versions, longer range and direction finding.
Where it is used
Fitness trackers, smartwatches, wireless headsets, medical sensors, asset tags, smart locks and phone-connected accessories use BLE.
Common pitfall
Throughput is limited, and the radio range is typically tens of meters with obstacles. Different phones and operating systems have quirks in connection handling and background restrictions. Pairing and bonding with weak security, such as just-works pairing, can expose devices. Advertising and connection parameters trade latency against power. Test with multiple phones and design reconnection logic.
