Beginner Topic 11 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
Mobile Performance and Battery
Efficiency concerns on constrained devices.
How it works
Mobile performance means responsive interfaces, fast startup and low resource use within the limited CPU, memory and battery of a phone. Targets include rendering 60 or more frames per second, which leaves about 16 milliseconds per frame, quick launch and small memory footprint. Battery use comes from the CPU, radio, screen, GPS and sensors, with the radio's wake cycles costing a lot. Tools include Android Profiler, Xcode Instruments, battery historians and systrace, and techniques include lazy loading, caching, image resizing, background scheduling and batching.
Where it is used
Every shipped app competes on speed and battery life, which influence ratings, retention and OS-level throttling or warnings.
Common pitfall
Work on the main thread causes dropped frames. Memory leaks and big images trigger the system to kill the app. Wake locks, frequent timers, polling and constant location updates drain batteries and may get an app flagged by the OS. Test on low-end devices, profile before optimizing, use platform schedulers such as WorkManager and defer non-urgent work.
