Beginner Topic 9 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

Sensors and Location

Accelerometer, GPS and related inputs.

How it works

Smartphones contain sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer, proximity and ambient light sensors, microphones, cameras and GPS and other GNSS receivers, with location also derived from Wi-Fi and cell towers. APIs deliver readings at configurable rates, and fused sensor data provides orientation and activity recognition. Location services trade accuracy against power, offering coarse and precise modes, geofencing and significant-change updates. Access requires runtime permissions, with separate background location permission.

Where it is used

Navigation, fitness tracking, ride sharing, augmented reality, step counting, fall detection and context-aware features use sensors and location.

Common pitfall

High-frequency sensing and continuous GPS drain the battery quickly, so use the lowest accuracy and rate that works and stop updates when not needed. Sensor readings are noisy and need filtering. Privacy is a serious concern, since location reveals sensitive patterns; ask only when necessary, explain why and handle denied permissions gracefully. Indoor GPS is unreliable.

Where it fits in the course

Sensors and Location is topic 9 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Beginner. It follows Push Notifications. The next topic is Mobile Networking.
