Advanced Topic 40 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT
PCB Design Basics
Laying out electronics on circuit boards.
How it works
Printed circuit board design turns a schematic into a physical board of copper layers on a substrate. The flow is schematic capture, component selection and footprints, placement, routing of traces between pads and vias, creating power and ground planes, design rule checks, generating Gerber files and a bill of materials and sending to fabrication and assembly. Good practices include decoupling capacitors near power pins, short and controlled-impedance high-speed traces, solid ground planes, keeping analog and digital sections separate, adequate trace widths for current and thermal management. Tools include KiCad and Altium.
Where it is used
Every electronic product from hobby projects to phones uses PCBs, with multilayer boards for dense designs.
Common pitfall
Wrong footprints, swapped pins and missing connections are costly mistakes found only after fabrication. Poor grounding and routing cause noise, EMI and failures in compliance testing. Manufacturing limits such as minimum trace spacing and drill sizes must be respected. Review schematics, run design rule checks, prototype first, add test points and consider assembly and testing early.
