Advanced Topic 42 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

ROS

Middleware framework for robot software.

How it works

The Robot Operating System is an open-source middleware framework, not a true operating system, for building robot software. It structures a robot as a graph of nodes, processes that communicate through publish-subscribe topics, request-response services and long-running actions, with messages defined in typed formats. It provides tooling such as launch files, parameter handling, transforms with tf2, visualization in RViz, simulation with Gazebo, bag files for recording and replay and ready-made packages for navigation, SLAM and manipulation. ROS 2 adds real-time and multi-robot support based on DDS.

Where it is used

Research labs, startups and industry use ROS for mobile robots, arms, drones and autonomous vehicles to reuse components and share code.

Common pitfall

Complex setups with many nodes need careful configuration of coordinate frames, timing and quality-of-service settings. Message latency and drops, version differences between ROS 1 and 2, and dependency management are common issues. It is not hard real-time by itself. Use simulation, record data for debugging and keep node interfaces clean.

Where it fits in the course

ROS is topic 42 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows Robotics Fundamentals. The next topic is Control Systems and PID.
