Advanced Topic 41 of 50 Mobile, Embedded & IoT

Robotics Fundamentals

Sensing, planning and acting machines.

How it works

Robotics combines mechanics, electronics and software to build machines that sense, decide and act. A robot has a mechanical structure of links and joints, actuators such as motors, sensors such as encoders, cameras, lidar and IMUs, and a controller running software. Core topics are kinematics, forward and inverse, relating joint angles to end-effector pose, dynamics, control, perception, localization and mapping, motion planning and behavior architectures such as the sense-plan-act loop and layered control.

Where it is used

Industrial arms, warehouse and delivery robots, vacuum cleaners, drones, surgical robots and planetary rovers apply these fundamentals.

Common pitfall

Real environments are noisy and uncertain, so models and sensors are imperfect: calibration errors, wheel slip and delays accumulate. Safety around humans is critical. Simulation does not capture all real-world effects, the sim-to-real gap. Start in simulation, build incrementally, test components separately and include emergency stops and limits in hardware.

Where it fits in the course

Robotics Fundamentals is topic 41 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Advanced. It follows PCB Design Basics. The next topic is ROS.
