Beginner Topic 3 of 51 AI & Machine Learning

Supervised Learning

Learning from labeled examples to predict outputs.

How it works

Supervised learning trains a model on labeled examples, input features paired with the correct output, so it can predict outputs for new inputs. Classification predicts categories such as spam or not spam, and regression predicts continuous values such as house price. Training minimizes a loss function measuring the difference between predictions and labels, and algorithms include linear models, trees, support vector machines, ensembles and neural networks.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Each training example has an input and the right answer.
  2. The model adjusts to reduce its mistakes.
  3. For a new input it predicts a label or value.
  4. The error is measured against the truth.
  5. Classification predicts categories and regression predicts numbers.

Where it is used

Email filtering, credit scoring, medical diagnosis, image recognition, speech recognition and demand forecasting are classic supervised tasks.

Common pitfall

Labels are expensive and may be noisy or biased, and the model learns whatever relationships exist in them, including unwanted ones. Class imbalance makes accuracy misleading. Overfitting memorizes training data. Use a held-out test set, appropriate metrics, cross-validation and check for data leakage from features that would not be available at prediction time.
