Beginner Topic 4 of 51 AI & Machine Learning

Unsupervised Learning

Finding structure in unlabeled data.

How it works

Unsupervised learning finds structure in data without labeled outputs. Major tasks are clustering, grouping similar items with methods such as k-means, hierarchical clustering and DBSCAN, dimensionality reduction with PCA, t-SNE and UMAP, density estimation, anomaly detection and learning representations with autoencoders and self-supervised objectives. There is no single correct answer, so evaluation relies on internal measures, downstream usefulness and human interpretation.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. The data has no labels.
  2. The algorithm looks for structure by itself.
  3. It may group similar items into clusters.
  4. Or find a compact representation.
  5. It is used for customer segments, anomaly detection and exploration.

Where it is used

Customer segmentation, topic discovery in documents, fraud and outlier detection, data compression, visualization and pre-training of large models use unsupervised methods.

Common pitfall

Results depend heavily on the distance metric, scaling and the chosen number of clusters, and algorithms always return something even when there is no real structure. Clusters can be unstable or meaningless. Scale features, try several settings, validate with domain knowledge and visual inspection and avoid over-interpreting patterns.

Where it fits in the course
