Zigbee and LoRa

Low-power mesh and long-range radio technologies.

How it works

Zigbee is a low-power mesh networking standard built on IEEE 802.15.4 in the 2.4 GHz band, where devices relay messages for each other, extending range over a home or building, with coordinators, routers and end devices, AES encryption and application profiles for lighting and sensors. LoRa is a long-range, low-power radio modulation in sub-GHz bands, used with the LoRaWAN protocol in a star-of-stars topology where devices send small packets to gateways forwarding to a network server, reaching kilometers with low data rates.

Where it is used

Zigbee is common in smart lighting, locks and home sensors, while LoRaWAN suits agricultural sensors, utility meters, smart city monitoring and asset tracking over wide areas.

Common pitfall

Zigbee mesh quality depends on router placement, and 2.4 GHz interference with Wi-Fi occurs. LoRa has very low bandwidth and duty-cycle limits set by regulations, so it is unsuitable for streaming or frequent updates, and downlink is limited. Regional frequency plans differ. Choose by range, data rate, power and ecosystem, and secure keys properly.

Where it fits in the course

Zigbee and LoRa is topic 34 of 50 in Mobile, Embedded & IoT, rated Intermediate. It follows Bluetooth Low Energy. The next topic is Edge Computing.
