Intermediate Topic 28 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Configuration Management

Tools like Ansible keeping servers consistent.

How it works

Configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef and Salt bring servers to a described state and keep them there. Playbooks or manifests list packages, files, services and users, and the tool applies only what differs, which is called idempotence, so running it twice is safe. Ansible connects over SSH without an agent, while Puppet and Chef usually run an agent that pulls its configuration. Inventories group hosts, and templates and variables adapt files per environment.

Where it is used

Operators use it to configure fleets consistently, apply security baselines, roll out changes and rebuild a failed server from code.

Common pitfall

Hand edits on servers cause configuration drift, non-idempotent shell commands break repeat runs and unreviewed playbooks run with root privileges. Keep everything in version control, test changes on staging and prefer immutable images where possible.

Where it fits in the course
