Helm and Kustomize

Templating and customizing Kubernetes manifests.

How it works

Both tools manage Kubernetes manifests across environments. Helm is a package manager: a chart bundles templated YAML with a values.yaml file, helm install renders it into a release, and helm upgrade and rollback track revisions. Charts are shared through repositories. Kustomize works without templates: a base set of plain manifests is customized by overlays that patch fields, add labels or change image tags per environment, and it is built into kubectl as kubectl apply -k. Helm suits distributing reusable software, Kustomize suits environment-specific variations of your own manifests.

Where it is used

Platform teams install databases and monitoring stacks from charts and keep dev, staging and production configuration in overlays.

Common pitfall

Heavy templating becomes hard to read, secrets in values files get committed and chart upgrades can change behavior unexpectedly. Review rendered output with helm template, pin chart versions and keep the number of values small.
