Intermediate Topic 30 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Logging Pipelines

Collecting and searching logs centrally.

How it works

A logging pipeline gathers log lines from many hosts and containers into one searchable place. Agents such as Fluent Bit, Filebeat or Vector read files or container output, parse and enrich entries with fields like service and trace ID, and ship them through a buffer such as Kafka to storage like Elasticsearch, OpenSearch or Loki, where tools such as Kibana or Grafana query them. Structured logging in JSON makes fields filterable, log levels separate noise from problems, and retention policies and index lifecycle rules control cost.

Where it is used

It lets engineers search across all instances during an incident, build alerts from log patterns and keep audit trails for compliance.

Common pitfall

Logging sensitive data such as passwords or personal information creates breaches, unbounded debug logging is expensive and unstructured text is hard to query. Redact secrets, log consistently with correlation IDs and set retention limits.
