Intermediate Topic 27 of 50 DevOps & Tooling
Terraform
Declarative multi-cloud infrastructure provisioning.
How it works
Terraform provisions infrastructure from declarative configuration written in HCL. You describe resources such as networks, virtual machines and databases, and providers translate them into calls to AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and many other APIs. terraform plan compares the configuration with the recorded state and shows what will be created, changed or destroyed, and terraform apply performs it. The state file maps configuration to real resources and is stored in a shared remote backend with locking. Modules package reusable pieces, and variables and outputs connect them.
Where it is used
Teams use it to create repeatable environments, review infrastructure changes in pull requests and tear down test stacks automatically.
Common pitfall
State files can contain secrets and must be protected, manual console changes cause drift, and editing state by hand risks corruption. Always read the plan, use remote state with locking and split large systems into separate states.
