Intermediate Topic 29 of 50 DevOps & Tooling

Monitoring and Alerting

Watching metrics and notifying on problems.

How it works

Monitoring collects measurements about systems and applications and alerting notifies people when they indicate a problem. Metrics such as CPU, memory, request rate, error rate and latency are sampled over time, logs record events and traces follow single requests. Common frameworks are the four golden signals (latency, traffic, errors, saturation), RED for services and USE for resources. Alert rules compare a metric to a threshold or trend and route notifications to on-call tools through severity levels and escalation policies. Dashboards and runbooks help responders act.

Where it is used

It detects outages before users complain, guides capacity decisions and supplies data for incident reviews and reliability targets.

Common pitfall

Too many noisy alerts cause fatigue so real problems are ignored, and alerts on causes such as CPU instead of user-visible symptoms mislead. Alert on symptoms, attach a runbook and review and delete alerts that never lead to action.
